Lipase inhibitors like Xenical and Alli can lead to weight loss of 4-8% after one year, alongside changes to diet and lifestyle.
They’re also well-tolerated, with human clinical trials indicating less than 10% of people stop taking the medication due to adverse effects.
However, all medications come with risks and rewards, and not everyone is suitable for weight-loss pills like Orlistat.
Deciding to start a new medication is a highly personal choice. So, ultimately, it depends on whether you believe it’s the best decision for your health going forward.
All weight-loss medications are designed to be taken alongside changes to your lifestyle. Without this, the effects of the drug will not last, and you’ll likely regain any weight you lose in the future.

Last year, the FDA approved Xenical for the treatment of obesity. Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Mounjaro for the treatment of obesity.
Mounjaro is both a weight-loss medication and a treatment for type 2 diabetes.
It’s similar to (under the brand name) the (GLP-1-antagonized) anti-diabetic drug type 2 (Byetta) used off-label for weight loss.
Byetta, also known as pioglitazone, is an at-home treatment used to treat obesity. It works by helping the pancreas absorb fat from the gut. Byetta is also approved for use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Pioglitazone is also an anti-psychotic medication that helps to manage depression and anxiety.
Byetta can also be used to treat irritability or anxiety associated with relationship challenges.
Byetta is only available with a doctor’s prescription.
Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor. It is designed to be taken by mouth.
It’s typically taken with a meal or a drink of water. However, the pill can be taken with or without food.
Orlistat has few side effects, but it can sometimes cause serious weight loss.
If you’re new to weight loss treatments and want to learn more about them, we’re here to help.
Tablets like (the brand name for Orlistat) work by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs. Ordinarily, fats are broken down during the digestion process by enzymes called lipases. Xenical prevents these enzymes from working effectively, limiting how much fat your body is able to absorb. The remaining, undigested fat is then excreted.
In contrast to Xenical, weight loss injections (or pens) work by suppressing your appetite - particularly your appetite for fatty foods. Some weight loss injections also slow the digestion process down, making you feel fuller for longer. They’re simple to use - check out our for more information.
Clinical trials have repeatedly demonstrated the effectiveness of both weight loss tablets and injections, particularly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle., participants using lost almost 15% of their body weight over a 15-month period.

In Canada, there are several overweight and obesity-related lifestyle interventions that can help reduce or even prevent obesity. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of lifestyle intervention to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Canadian adult women. Methods
This was a cross-sectional study using electronic databases from January 2016 to April 2020, with a target population of Canadian adults aged 18–44 years with overweight and obesity as the focus. We included women who had used orlistat or any other prescription weight loss products, had had a diagnosis of overweight, or had any history of a weight-related illness in the previous 6 months. We identified eligible participants through an online search by e-mail. The search was performed in January 2016.
We assessed the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the population, using a standardized questionnaire, and assessed the impact of lifestyle intervention on these measures, as well as the impact of lifestyle intervention on weight and adiposity. We also assessed the impact of lifestyle intervention on obesity, using the waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and waist-to-hip ratio.
In total, 890 eligible participants (0.2% female and 0.6% male) were identified. We identified a mean age of 18.3 years ± 0.6, mean BMI of 28.1 ± 4.5, mean waist circumference of 63.3 ± 14.9, mean waist-to-hip ratio of 1.58 ± 1.9, and mean weight of 10.9 ± 4.5 (SD).
In Canadian women with overweight and obesity, lifestyle intervention is effective in reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity. However, it is not recommended for use in individuals with overweight and obesity.
Orlistat, the active ingredient in the main active ingredient of all prescription weight loss products, is one of the most effective drugs for weight management in Canada []. For those who have overweight or obesity, there is a need to consider the potential impact of lifestyle intervention on their diet, physical activity, and blood pressure. In addition to weight loss, lifestyle intervention may affect other health markers [, ]. For instance, a large-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) [–] compared the effects of lifestyle intervention and other pharmacological therapies on weight loss outcomes in overweight and obese women with obesity []. However, only two large RCTs [–] included in this study [–] investigated whether lifestyle intervention may improve weight loss in overweight and obesity. These trials included over 6 million women in Canada and found that lifestyle intervention was not associated with improved weight loss []. However, there are limited studies on lifestyle intervention and its effects on obesity. This study focused on the impact of lifestyle intervention on weight and adiposity, including changes in body weight, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-hip ratio. In this study, the impact of lifestyle intervention on weight and adiposity was assessed using the validated tool (the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), developed by the British Association for the Study of Erectile Function [BASE] in June 2019 []). The IIEF score was assessed by two trained health professionals (HPT) and was scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 3, with a score between 0 to 5 indicating no improvement or no change in the domain scores, and 5 to 8 indicating greater or greater improvement in the domain score. The IIEF score was also assessed using a modified version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF) questionnaire []. The IIEF-EF questionnaire is a global version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF). The IIEF-EF is a modified version of the International Rating Scale (IRS) []. It has been validated for use in individuals with overweight or obesity and is used in a range of settings worldwide. The IIEF-EF questionnaire is not routinely used in clinical practice, and is considered to be an instrument with a low burden of assessment in clinical trials []. The IIEF-EF has a high reliability and validity, and is widely used to assess sexual function and to evaluate the relationship between sexual activity and cardiovascular risk factors []. However, the quality of its evaluation is inconsistent in some studies, and in some studies, it has poor reliability or even minimal validity [, ]. The IIEF-EF score was assessed in the Canadian population at the national level.
For a while now, we’ve been hearing that the appetite for weight-loss medications in the United States is getting more and more expensive. This seems to be true, with a new research study that looks at whether the price of these medications will be even lower in the first place.
The research looked at the prices of two popular weight-loss drugs – Xenical and Orlistat – in four countries that are responsible for over 60% of all new prescriptions.
The results of the study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in July.
This year, the drug price for Orlistat in the United States will be around $1,000 per pill.
The researchers, led by Dr. Steven Nissen, a professor of medicine at Northwestern University’s School of Medicine, studied the prices of the two medications in the United States. The average price for the drug was $9.89, or $6.8 per pill.
The researchers found that the average price of Orlistat is $15.50 per pill in the United States. The price for Xenical is $20.50, or $2.7 per pill.
That’s more than the price for all the other medications used to help people lose weight.
The price for Alli, sold by Roche under the brand name Alli, is about $16.67, or $1.4 per pill.
The price for Alli is about $4.13 per pill, or $0.4 per pill. The research found that the price for Alli was $11.75 per pill.
The price for Xenical is about $9.48 per pill, or $1.8 per pill.
The study shows that all three drugs are at least partially responsible for about one-third of all new prescriptions for weight loss.
The research was funded by the Obesity Medicine Association of America. The results, which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, will be reported in the July issue of theNew England Journal of Medicine.
